Alice G. Moore Pouncey, retired Professor of Psychology and Home Economics at East Central Community College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education.

Having retired in 2001, Ms. Pouncey spent nearly 40 years as an educator. She began her career in 1961 as a teacher with Enterprise Middle School in Missouri. After teaching there for two years, she moved on to J.F. Shields High School, teaching there until 1965. In 1969, she began her decades-long tenure as a professor of psychology and home economics at East Central Community College in Decatur, Mississippi, and she remained there until her retirement in 2001.

As a young girl, Ms. Pouncey had an aunt who was a home economist, and who helped to influence her own career decisions. She also remembers having a teacher in high school, Ms. Davis, who influenced her in what she wanted to do. Ms. Pouncey began her education at Jones County Junior College, where she received an associate’s degree in 1959. Afterwards, she transitioned to the University of Southern Mississippi, where she graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science. After working for several years as a high school teacher, she went back to school to pursue a master’s in psychology at Livingston University (Now University of West Alabama), receiving an MEd in 1968. Going back to school at that time was difficult; she and her husband had three young children at the time, but through perseverance and hard work, she was able to accomplish her goals.

In addition to her primary positions, Ms. Pouncey has also taught as a Sunday School Teacher for the Methodist Church, and is a former member of the 4-H Advisory Council. Over the years, Ms. Pouncey has been honored and recognized for her efforts and accomplishments numerous times. In 1994 she was named an Outstanding Instructor by East Central Community College, and she is the recipient of the State 4-H Alumni Award. In addition, she has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who of American Women, as well as the 20th edition of Who’s Who in the South and Southwest.
