Stephen Butterfield, Professor of Education at the University of Maine, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership as a higher educator.

Dr. Butterfield started his higher education at Springfield College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1971. He started working as a fourth-grade teacher at Whitingham Elementary School, and in 1972, he transitioned to Halifax School, where he would become the principal. In 1972, as a certified adapted physical educator, he started as a physical education teacher at the Austine School for the Deaf. From 1970 to 1976, Dr. Butterfield served in the Vermont National Guard. He decided to continue his studies, and in 1980, he earned a Master of Education from Keene State College, before departing from the Austine School for the Deaf in 1981. He completed his education in 1984, earning a PhD from Ohio State University, and took a position as a professor of education, special education, kinesiology, and physical education at the University of Maine.

In addition to his work as an educator, Dr. Butterfield is the chairman of the Maine Adapted Physical Education Task Force, and has served as president for the Maine Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. He was a member of the board of directors of the National Consortium for Physical Education and Recreation for Individuals with Disabilities, and was also a member of the Alliance for Health. Dr. Butterfield has been recognized for his excellence with myriad awards, including the Honor Award from the Alliance for Health, the Meritorious Award for Exceptional Project Performance from the National Youth Sports Program, and various awards from the Maine Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Dr. Butterfield worked as an editor for “The Advocate” and The Maine Journal of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and has contributed multiple articles to professional journals. As a testament to his success, he has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in American Education, and Who’s Who in America.
