Joy Schwab, Physical Education Teacher at Sequoyah Elementary School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in physical education.
Inspired by her mother, who was also a teacher, Ms. Schwab made the decision to attend college at the University of Maryland where she took a variety of courses in education. Eventually, these courses sparked her interest in physical education, which resulted in her earning a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Physical Education in 1963. Moreover, she received a Master of Arts in Elementary Physical Education from the aforementioned university in 1973. Consequently, she joined Belt Junior High School in Wheaton, Maryland, as a physical education teacher for a year, later accepting the same role with Gaithersburg Junior High School from 1963 to 1968.
As she progressed through her career, she taught physical education at a number of schools throughout Maryland including Laytonsville Elementary School, Woodfield Elementary School, Waters Landing Elementary School, Goshen Elementary School, Gaithersburg Elementary School, Strawberry Knoll Elementary School, and Sequoyah Elementary School, from 1968 until her retirement in 1998. In an effort to remain aware of changes in the field, Ms. Schwab maintains affiliation with the Maryland Association of Health. In the past, she was a member of the National Education Association and the Maryland State Teachers Association. Celebrating nearly 60 years of marriage to her husband, Warren J. Schwab, the two are proud parents of Joy and Warren. She is also the grandparent to eight grandchildren.
