Jane Katz, Professor within the Department of Health and Physical Education at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of swimming education.

Passionate about helping others excel both in and out of the classroom, Dr. Katz hasKatz, Jane 4299776_3265095 TP dedicated her career to physical education with a focus on water safety. Dr. Katz has given 55 years of continuous service as a faculty member with the City University of New York system, previously serving as a physical education teacher with Bronx Community College from 1964 to 1989 before her current role that she assumed in 1989. She has also been a water safety instructor and trainer for the American Red Cross, a reviewer for the American Red Cross’ water safety and swimming procedures, and a proponent as well as a founder of swimming organizations.

Dr. Katz’s parents, Dorothea and Leon Katz, encouraged a young Dr. Katz and her siblings to swim. The love for the water remained with Dr. Katz, who has achieved top World and United States Masters Swimming rankings throughout the course of her career. She has been a judge for prestigious swimming events as well as a speaker in the field and a coach for other swimmers. As a testament to success, Dr. Katz has been voted one of the 25 Most Powerful People in the World of Aquatics by the Aquatics International Magazine in 2005, named the Women’s Swim Coach the Year at the NCAA Division III CUNY Athletic Conference in 2003 and 2004, and inducted to the Metropolitan Swimming Hall of Fame at the Eisenhower Park in New York in 2003, among numerous other achievements.Katz, Jane 4299776_3265095 TP 2

In order to help others, Dr. Katz developed K.A.R.E., Kids Aquatic Re-Entry, for the Youth At Risk Juvenile Justice program in 2008 and recently created a program called W.E.T.s 4 VETS® at John Jay College, a holistic program to help veteran’s re-entry into civilian life by focusing on aquatics exercise for veterans. She has further shared her knowledge with others via her creative works which include, but are certainly not limited to, the videos “Your Water Workout,” “The New W.E.T. Workout,” “Swim Basics,” “Tri-Synchro” and the books “Swimming for Total Fitness, A Complete Program for Swimming Stronger, Faster, and Better” and “The Aquatic Handbook for Lifetime Fitness,” among many others.

To prepare for her career in education, Dr. Katz earned a BS in health and physical education from the City College of New York in 1963 and an MA in organization and administration from New York University in 1966. She then matriculated at the Teacher’s College at Columbia University where she earned an MEd in therapeutic recreation for aging and an EdD in gerontology in 1972 and 1978, respectively. Dr. Katz is featured in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who of American Women as well as the sixth edition of Who’s Who in American Education, the 27th edition of Who’s Who in the East, the 17th edition of Who’s Who in the World, and the first edition of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders of America.
