Gloria Christine Blair, Retired Building Trade Journeyman for Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Pipe Fitter, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of trade skills.
Hailing from California, Ms. Blair worked a number of phone operation jobs before relocating to Honolulu, Hawaii, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts from Chaminade University in 1984. Shortly after the birth of her son Christopher Arthur, Ms. Blair attended a job search fair where she learned of the great need for women who could work skilled trades. Though she was initially uncertain if she could do pipe fitting for refrigeration, her father encouraged her to apply herself and accomplish her goals. Strengthened by his faith in her, Ms. Blair earned BTJ Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Certification and accepted a job as a building trade journeyman for air-conditioning, refrigeration pipefitter and steamfitter. She began an apprenticeship in 1991 and worked until her retirement from manual labor in 2011.
Ms. Blair volunteered with her church as a religion teacher for 25 years, which is where she met a young boy with special needs. Ms. Blair designed learning directives appropriate for him and his needs and, upon receiving encouragement from a scribe at the union, decided to pursue teaching. She now works as a teacher’s aide in special education and helps kids with behavioral challenges surmount their problems and follow their dreams in their own right. In addition to these pursuits, Ms. Blair is a member of the Local 250 and is involved with the Coalition of Residents of Lynwood. As a testament to her success, Ms. Blair has been lauded with the Albert Nelson Marquis Award and has been featured in the 22nd edition of Who’s Who in the West and the third and fourth editions of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders.
