Driven by a love of numbers that began in childhood, Mr. Higman is highly regarded for his impactful work at the higher education level over the last 50 years. He was inspired to enter the field of teaching by a nun who taught him during his high school tenure at a small Catholic school. Her ability to engage with students and teach them something new in a way that was impactful made Mr. Higman eager to create the same experience for others. Before establishing himself in the field of education, he attended Niagara University and achieved a Bachelor of Arts in 1954 before obtaining a Master of Science in education from Syracuse University in 1957 and a Master of Arts in mathematics from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1963.

Mr. Higman took on an instructor role with his alma mater, Niagara University, in 1956 for one year. Thereafter, he served his country as a first lieutenant of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, during which time he garnered new skills and learned the importance of maintaining a disciplined work ethic. After completing his service in 1962, he returned to Niagara University as an assistant professor, where he then gradually rose through the ranks. In 1968, he became an associate professor and in 1982, he became a professor. Today, he continues to teach at the university; a place that he calls his second home. Known personally as someone who is kind, fair and friends with everyone, Mr. Higman is as regarded for his involvement outside of the classroom as he is in it. He previously served as treasurer of the Niagara County American Cancer Society for 10 years, trustee of the Niagara Catholic High School for 21 years, and president of the Niagara University Lay Teacher Association for 20 years. As he looks ahead to the future, Mr. Higman intends to continue inspiring and educating at Niagara University.
