Paul L. Joskow, Ph.D., Economist, Educator and Foundation Executive at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Alfred P. Specializing in industrial organization, government regulation of industry, competition policy, and energy and environmental economics, Dr. Joskow is an esteemed educator, philanthropist and economist who has been the Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics Emeritus at Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 2010, having previously served as the Elizabeth and James Killian chair since 1996, head of the department of economics from 1994 to 1998, Mitsui professor from 1989 to 1996, professor from 1978 to 2010, associate professor from 1975 to 1978, and assistant professor from 1972 to 1975. Alongside his role as an educator, he also served as the president of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation from 2008 to 2017, a nonprofit organization that provides grants to support education and research in the fields of science, technology and economics.
In addition to his work in philanthropy and education, Dr. Joskow has been the secretary of the Energy Advisory Board with the Council on Foreign Relations since 2013, member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 2009, and on the board of trustees of Putnam Mutual Funds since 1997. He formerly served on the scientific advisory board of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Institut d’Économie Industrielle in Toulouse, France. Likewise, he was a longstanding research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research from 1988 to 2007, visiting professor at the JFK School of Government with Harvard University from 1979 to 1980, and consultant at NERA Economic Consulting from 1972 to 1997. Previously on the board of directors of TransCanada Corporation, he was also involved with the National Grid PLC, The World Bank and New England Electric Systems.
Equally passionate about his community, Dr. Joskow has been on the board of directors of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research and the Exelon Corporation since 2018. He has also been a trustee of Yale University since 2008, having formerly served as president of the Yale University Council for 13 years, and on the board of overseers of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a role he has fulfilled since 2005. A contributor of myriad articles to professional journals, he has also been a co-editor of the Journal of Law, Economics and Organization in the early 1900s.
Dr. Joskow holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Cornell University and a Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy from Yale University. Completing his doctorate in less than four years, Dr. Joskow originally intended to go to college for engineering or chemistry; however, upon learning about economics, he altered his path and adjusted accordingly. He attributes his success to his college advisor, Alfred Khan, who worked in areas that integrated economics, political science and public policy. He says that Mr. Khan was the major individual who influenced the path of his career.
The former president of the International Association for Energy Economics, Dr. Joskow has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. The recipient of the Founders Award from the National Action Counsel for Minorities in Engineering in 2017, he also received the Adelman-Frankel Award from the United States Association for Energy Economics in 2009 and the Yale Medal from the International Association for Energy Economics in 2005. Recognized with the Outstanding Contributions to the Profession Award by the International Society for Energy Economics in 2004, he first won the Best Paper Award from the International Association for Energy Economics in 1994. Notably, he has been included in several editions of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the East and Who’s Who in the World.
